Description from the seller

The painting is 20x20 cm with a frame of 32x32 cm.

Kurihara’s abstract paintings and drawings are an outlet for his subconscious. They are characterized by a vivid explosion of contrasting colors and geometric patterns.

Although drawing was part of his upbringing in Tokyo, Kurihara never attended art school. Instead, he let himself be inspired by his travels through Canada and Europe and by the artists he met along the way. He settled in Berlin, where he developed his artistic style and learned new techniques.

Kurihara combines Asian and Western artistic languages in his works. The former can be seen in the fine lines and the recurring presence of negative black spots, reminiscent of dark ink used in traditional Japanese drawings and calligraphy.

Kurihara

These black spots are contrasted by bold, vivid colors reminiscent of neon lights that define Tokyo’s nocturnal cityscape. Kurihara left this city to escape its hectic life. Such buzzing, fast-moving experiences are reflected in his artworks, which often contain small lines and geometric shapes radiating from a central core and evoking an explosion or many rapid currents.

Kurihara’s artworks are also influenced by architecture. In his work it is possible to glimpse changing and fantastical cityscapes inspired by the Japanese capital. From this perspective, the concrete-colored areas of his paintings can depict the architectures of the city, juxtaposed with the bright lights of advertisements and shop windows and the swift movement of its inhabitants. In his works, Kurihara unravels his mind and thoughts by visualizing fantastical realities and creating abstract mind maps in which figurative, abstract, and geometric elements interact with one another. These fantastical subjects emerge from a negative space and awaken the viewer’s curiosity with their level of detail. The audience is led on a journey of discovery, as new forms continually appear before their eyes, just like in Kurihara’s kaleidoscopic realities.
