Evident wear, chafing, and widespread losses to the leather of the spines; one label detached but preserved. Internally, pages generally well preserved with some typical foxing and occasional browning. BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Pierre-Nicolas Rollé (c. 1770–c. 1840) was one of the most authoritative French scholars active in archaeological and historical-religious studies during the Restoration. Librarian of the City of Paris and a member of important literary and antiquarian societies, he devoted much of his career to interpreting the religions of antiquity through the comparative study of classical sources, monuments, and archaeological evidence. Recherches sur le culte de Bacchus represents his most important work and remains one of the major nineteenth-century French contributions to the study of Dionysianism and mystery cults.

Published between 1823 and 1824 by the Parisian bookseller-publisher J. S. Merlin, the work was conceived as a specialized study intended for libraries, antiquaries, archaeologists, and scholars, rather than for a general audience.
