Description from the seller
This is a exceptional long damask linen table linen with two sets of initials E.B.
The embroidered initials on this table linen strongly evoke the Rococo style of the early 18th century, which was especially popular in Paris during that period.
Rococo design is characterised by elegance, lightness, floral motifs, muted colours, and an exuberant use of flowing, natural, curvilinear ornamentation. The style soon extended beyond decorative arts into painting, where its aesthetic became closely associated with themes of love, beauty, and nature.
From France, Rococo rapidly spread throughout Europe, influencing artistic and decorative traditions in Germany, Austria, England, and many other countries.
The two sets of E.B. initials are embroidered in high relief with beautifully executed curves and flourishes.
The back ground damask figures the early XXth Century checker damask design which was popular at the time as little else was available.
PLEASE NOTE:
There are 2 small holes. One has been darned and the other we have added a piece of "thermo collant" to avoid further damage. Both holes are caused by smoking during lunch/dinner and the hot ash not reaching the ashtray on time. See last 2 photos.
PLEASE NOTE:
As it happens we have a set of six napkins with the same initials E.B. in the auction.
