Japanese Satsuma lid vase with Shishi lion — Meiji period, ca. 1880–1910

Fine Japanese Satsuma stoneware vase with original lid, Meiji period (1868–1912), overall height ca. 32 cm.
The cream-colored glaze with characteristic fine crazing shows around the circumference four large reserves with hand-painted scenes: Samurai in landscape, court figures, cranes above an autumn landscape, as well as wisteria and chrysanthemums. The reserves are framed by richly gilded borders with Moriage dotting, meander pattern, and floral medallions. Lid with meander border and a three-dimensionally worked Shishi-lion made as a knob.
Condition:

In age-appropriate good condition. Tail tip of the Shishi-lion broken — break edge documented. No cracks in the body. Gilding partially worn as expected with age. No maker’s seal on the base.
Dimensions: H. ca. 32 cm (overall with lid)
