Description from the seller
Voltaire
La Henriade
London: no imprint, 1728
Deluxe edition in quarto, large-format. Frontispiece engraved + portrait of Voltaire + title-page + 2 leaves with a dedication from Voltaire to the queen + 202 pages + an allegorical engraving of the king with the Dauphin + two portraits of Henry IV + 42 engraved plates (contains Moureau’s plates for the 4to and 8vo editions, plus those by Gravelot). Illustrated with engraved headpieces and cul-de-lampe.
Bound in full marbled leather, gold tooling on both boards, raised bands, spine label.
First illustrated edition of this text and also the first time the title Henriade is used, presented in 10 cantos, revised by Voltaire. The work heroically explains the siege of Paris in 1589, the religious wars, and contrasts the Enlightenment spirit with barbarism and fanaticism. Although today it is one of Voltaire’s lesser-known works, in its time it enjoyed great popularity, not devoid of controversy; the author’s aim was to rival the great classical epic poets not only in theme but also in structure.
Brunet V/1360.
