Description from the seller
KRAKEN is a 70 x 100 cm painting by Flavia Delgado that reinterprets one of the most legendary creatures of marine mythology through a vibrant aesthetic inspired by classic comics, adventure posters, and the popular imagination of the 20th century. The work transforms an ancient legend into an image full of visual energy, narrative tension, and spectacle.
The composition is dominated by a gigantic red kraken rising over the sea with its tentacles extended in all directions. Beneath it, a fleet of ships confronts an explosion of chaos and movement while the horizon seems to tremble at the creature’s appearance. The contrast between the monster’s monumental scale and the fragility of the vessels reinforces the sense of wonder and danger.
The artist employs an intense yet deliberately limited color palette, based on deep blues, bright reds, vivid yellows, defined blacks, and cream tones. This combination enhances the graphic character of the work and harkens back to adventure novel covers, film posters, and pulp illustrations that fueled the collective imagination for decades.
Beyond its fantastical appearance, KRAKEN speaks to what escapes human control. The creature can be interpreted as a symbolic representation of great challenges, unknown fears, or the forces of nature that constantly remind us of the fragility of our certainties. In front of it, the ships symbolize human persistence, exploration, and the will to keep moving forward even when the horizon becomes uncertain.
The work deliberately plays with the emotion of classic adventure stories, where mystery and danger are inseparable parts of the journey. The viewer does not witness a defeat or a victory, but the exact moment when both possibilities remain open. That narrative tension keeps the scene alive and allows each observer to imagine their own ending.
With a powerful visual presence and an aesthetic that marries nostalgia and contemporaneity, KRAKEN celebrates the capacity of myths to keep fascinating us. The work reminds us that, even though modern maps may seem complete, there will always be unknown territories in the sea, in the imagination, and within ourselves.
