Description from the seller
Type of object: Traditional Japanese pipe (Kiseru) of a complete metal typology (Maru-gando).
Estimated period: Circa 1900–1930 (Late Meiji / Early Shōwa transition).
Dimensions: Total length 150 mm | Maximum height (bowl area) 11 mm | Tube diameter 5 mm.
Materials and Authenticity:
• Ends (Mouthpiece and Bowl): Made of solid sterling silver. Both ends have been manually tested using the reactive acid test, yielding a positive result for silver.
• Central body: Made of a traditional textured metal alloy, featuring an excellent and deep natural dark patina to create contrast with the polished sections.
• Ornamental details: The face of the character features fine and meticulous inlays of genuine gold (Zōgan) visible in the eyes and eyebrows, bringing exceptional shine and richness to the piece.
Decoration and Condition:
• Iconography: Magnificent hand-engraved relief work, located in the central section of the piece. It very delicately depicts the figure of a traditional warrior or Japanese deity clad in armor. The expressiveness of the face and the dynamism of the hair demonstrate the craftsman’s great skill.
• Marks / Punches: No stamps or visible silversmith signatures. This is a common standard in much export metalwork and traditional-use pieces from the Meiji and Shōwa periods, where authenticity and value are supported directly by the quality of the inlay work and the metal’s purity (acid-tested positive).
• Condition: Excellent vintage/collector’s condition. No structural dents, deformations, or subsequent soldering. Retains a very clean period patina that enhances the carved volumes and the contrasts between the different metals.
(Please carefully review the attached macro photographs to assess the details of the metal, the reliefs, and the gold inlays).
