Description from the seller
Title: Look East
Artist: Mario Silano
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 40x30 cm
The work presents itself as a refined half-figure portrait in a classical layout, dominated by a vibrant palette of cool tones in which turquoise excels, masterfully balanced by the warm hues of the complexion and the wood in the background. The subject is a young woman captured in a three-quarter pose, with her face delicately turned toward the viewer, on which rests a magnetic, clear gaze tinged with a subtle melancholy.
The woman’s features are treated with soft, idealized realism. The fair skin is caressed by a diffused light that enhances the blush of her cheekbones and the softness of her lips, slightly parted and coral-colored. The dark hair is gathered in a soft hairstyle from which a few rebellious strands escape to frame the face, imparting freshness and spontaneity to the composition.
The head is crowned with a band or turban of powder blue, enriched by delicate pink floral embroidery. The garment, ethereal and bohemian in cut, features a generous neckline that leaves the shoulders bare and is enriched by light drapery and small floral motifs faded on the sleeve. The ornamental arrangement is lavish yet elegant: long dangling earrings with pearls and settings catch the light, harmonizing with a rich layering of antique-style necklaces, where turquoise-colored hard stones set in darkened metal stand out.
The setting suggests an intimate, timeless interior. The rear wall plays with shades of blue and emerald green, interrupted on the left by vertical golden streaks that evoke light reflections or details of a luxurious tapestry. On the right, the geometric outline of a dark wooden frame creates a strong chromatic and structural contrast, balancing the fluidity of the subject’s forms.
The work stands out for its extraordinary technical mastery in rendering textures—from the gleam of the jewelry to the lightness of the fabric—and for its ability to evoke an atmosphere suspended between nineteenth-century classicism and an exotic charm with orientalist overtones. The artist’s signature, "M. Silano", is clearly visible in the bottom right corner in dark characters.
