Description from the seller
Exceptional and beautiful desktop photo frame from an authentic Art Nouveau era (circa 1900), made in bronze or gilded brass of artistic casting. This piece is an outstanding example of the delicacy, mysticism, and organic sinuosity that defined the modernist movement in Belle Époque France.
The design immediately stands out for its bold asymmetrical crescent-moon-shaped structure, a high-level solution of cabinetmaking and casting that broke with the rigid classical canons of the 19th century to embrace the modernity of the new century.
This object was not a simple utilitarian element; it was a symbol of status and an amulet charged with romantic and artistic meaning in the Paris salons: the main relief sculpts a beautiful nymph or muse with floating garments and a classic updo. In her raised left hand she proudly holds a laurel crown, the ultimate classical symbol of triumph, success, and immortality.
The Offering of the Arts: On observing the lower left, one sees how the lady interacts with her right hand on a small column or classical altar. In the visual language of the era, this meant “offer the triumph on the altar of the arts.” It was the preferred gift that ladies of high society gave to their partners (writers, artists, or politicians) to host his portrait.
Inspiration from the Lifelong Dance: The sinuous folds of the dress enveloping the opening of the photograph are directly inspired by the famous choreographies of Loïe Fuller, the dancer who hypnotized Paris at the 1900 Universal Exposition with her moving silk fabrics. It is the pure reflection of the famous whiplash line of Art Nouveau.
Expert collectors will appreciate the subtle details that guarantee the absolute authenticity of this piece against modern reproductions. When turning the piece, one observes the rustic and honest texture of the bronze as it came from the sand molds in the Paris workshops. It preserves intact its two original metal pins or securing tabs fixed with old flat-head screws.
Working Fold-Out Support: The rear tilting stand is exquisitely pierced with Rococo-modernist scrolls. The hinge axis works perfectly and provides excellent stability.
Excellent vintage condition for a piece with more than 120 years of history. It shows no breaks, cracks, deformations, or subsequent welds. It retains its original gilding softened by time, displaying an honest patina with subtle signs of use and natural greenish/dark patina in the recesses on the back that certify its age. The original glass and back cardboard are missing, easily replaceable (we avoid sending to prevent unnecessary breakages during transport).
Note for bidders: An authentic display piece, ideal both for collectors of desk objects and Belle Époque bronzes, and for enthusiasts of the aesthetic universe of Alphonse Mucha and Hector Guimard. The lot will be packed with high-density professional protection to guarantee 100% safe transport to anywhere in the world.
