AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Oil on canvas,

"The Epiphany"

The Epiphany is one of the best-known genre scenes by the Dutch painter Jan Steen, painted around 1662. The painting depicts, in characteristic, humorous fashion, the traditional celebration of Epiphany (January 6) within a seventeenth-century Dutch household.

Painted by Frans van Valderen.

Frans van Valderen was born in 1888 in Den Bosch (North Brabant). He was a painter, draftsman, antiquarian; and a true Den Bosch native, the son of a baker who also showed some artistic talent in his own trade.

After a stint at Mosmans bookstore, he pursued training at the School for Useful and Visual Arts and, under the guidance of, among others, Dorus Hermsen, won many prizes for painting, drawing, ornamentation, etc.

He became one of the leading figures in the Den Bosch artistic life; alongside painting and drawing he designed banners, weapons and platters, and was a central figure in many Den Bosch revues, for which he wrote the texts, designed costumes, painted scenery, and directed.

Many introductions and commissions came to him through the mediation of Herman Moerkerk. He was also the central figure behind the "Solemn Procession"; wrote a series of articles about Den Bosch in the Sint Jansklokken and published poems.

The work is generally in good condition (with some signs of aging).
The work is signed and dated at the lower right.
The work is mounted in a matching frame (with light signs of use).
Canvas size is 80 by 100 cm.

The work is carefully packed and shipped.
