Vieillard & Cie, Bordeaux - Jules Vieillard Faience Quinqué Lamp / Vase, 19th Century
Beautiful antique faience quinqué lamp / decorative vase attributed to Vieillard & Cie, Bordeaux, from the period of Jules Vieillard, France, second half of the 19th century.
The piece has a striking rounded body with a tall cylindrical neck, decorated in vivid turquoise-blue enamel with polychrome floral, foliate and geometric motifs. The decoration includes stylised flowers, scrolling leaves, dotted medallions and oriental-inspired patterns, typical of the Japonisme / Neo-Renaissance taste popular in French decorative arts of the late 19th century.
The ceramic body is mounted on a dark patinated metal base with an architectural stepped form. The upper rim and neck are also fitted with dark metal mounts, suggesting that the object was originally conceived as a quinqué oil lamp or lamp body, later functioning as a decorative vase or collector’s object.
The colours are very vibrant, with beautiful contrast between the bright blue ground, green foliage, pink and yellow floral details, white medallions and dark blue outlines.
