Description from the seller
Constant Artz
Born in Paris 03-06-1870 - Died 23-02-1951.
The watercolor is handmade, framed, with the glass removed.
Constant Artz is the painter of the well-known friendly and sunny scenes with a duck and its young at the edge of a canal.
Father Artz himself had been apprenticed to Jozef Israëls and, during his Paris period, was little influenced by his new surroundings. He mainly painted Dutch landscapes and Dutch rural life.
Constant attended the Hague Academy and later became a pupil in the workshop of the painter Tony Offermans. Offermans was also a typical Hague painter in the style of Israëls. Constant moved from The Hague to Delft in 1893.
Through his connection with Jozef Israëls, father Artz knew a large number of painters, among them some of the foremost. He also got on well with Willem Maris and Hendrik Willem Mesdag, who offered him the necessary advice.
Later Artz moved to Soestdijk. The support of the buying public helped Artz through the difficult crisis years that were hard for many artists.
During the war he managed to support his family by exchanging paintings for food. Artz lived to a fairly old age and died in 1951 in Soestdijk.
The watercolor is carefully packed and sent by registered mail. The dimensions are inclusive of the frame.
