Description from the seller
Emile Bidault (1835-1896)
French School
Animated Morvan landscape
Watercolor signed and dated at the lower right: E. Bidault, 1884
Dimensions: 37 x 54.5 cm
This watercolor comes from the private collection of a great 19th-century art collector who resided near Paris.
Watercolor in good condition with no tears, which must have faded due to its great age, but which has nevertheless retained a remarkable charm and freshness. Photos taken with a good camera are faithful to reality.
Emile Bidault is a renowned French painter and watercolorist. He was born on May 18, 1835 in Avallon, France and died in 1895.
He enrolled on April 16, 1854 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then studied under Charles Gleyre (1806-1874) and Justin Ouvrié (1806-1879). He debuted at the Paris Salon in 1863 and continued to appear at Expositions with landscapes from the surroundings of Avallon and Nièvre. His paintings resemble the Barbizon School and also have an impressionist side.
He also exhibited at the Musée d'Auxerre and the Musée de Varzy, where one of his works is featured.
He lived at 19 Rue de la Pépinière in Paris 8th arrondissement but also in Avallon, where his family resided.
Although he was also a remarkable portraitist (portrait of Mr. Justin Ouvrié; The Spinner; A Morvandian Family...), he is above all a renowned landscape painter. The Morvan, which he greatly loved, inspired him profoundly. He used to say of the Morvan that it was "a land so worthy of Poetry and Painting".
The watercolor, put up for sale at auction here, is full of the bucolic charm of Morvan countryside and is imbued with a deep poetic sentiment. It is a true jewel of art.
The works by this artist, who is highly regarded, are very rarely offered on the art market. This is a genuine opportunity to seize.
The packaging will be of high quality: the work will be very well protected
