- Claude Monet (1840–1926) was the leading figure of Impressionism and one of the most influential artists in the history of modern art. Working primarily in France, Monet revolutionized painting by focusing on fleeting light, atmosphere, and perception rather than detailed realism. He painted directly from nature (en plein air), using broken brushstrokes and a luminous palette to capture transient moments. Over time, his work evolved toward increasingly abstract explorations of color and reflection, culminating in the famous Water Lilies series.
