Description from the seller
Bamboo and reed work basket / magazine holder – Italy, 1940s–1950s
Attributed to Vittorio Bonacina
Elegant and refined multifunctional basket woven from bamboo and reed, an authentic expression of post-war Italian taste and of Lombard artisanal craftsmanship tied to the working of natural materials. The sinuous line, the light yet sturdy structure, and the geometrical weave made entirely by hand render this object a perfect example of Italian decorative design from the 1950s and 1960s.
The piece features a curved bamboo frame with refined details in woven reed and a double opening lid, a solution that is as practical as it is aesthetically sophisticated. The arch handle gives vertical momentum to the composition, while the harmonious proportions and the warm tone of the bamboo immediately evoke the sophisticated atmospheres of Italian homes in the mid-century period.
Perfect as a magazine holder, a work basket, a decorative container, or a boho-chic or Italian mid-century furniture element, this piece has a strong stage presence while maintaining a great visual lightness.
The craftsmanship recalls Vittorio Bonacina’s production, the historic Italian manufacturer specialized in bamboo, reed, and rattan furniture, renowned for collaborating with some of the most important designers of twentieth-century Italy.
Vintage condition is very good and consistent with age and use, with an appealing patina that enhances its authenticity and character.
Dimensions:
* width: 45 cm
* depth: 43 cm
* height: 66 cm
Vittorio Bonacina manufactory originated in Lurago d’Erba, in Brianza, within the historic Italian tradition of reed and bamboo processing. Between the 1950s and 1960s the company became one of the main international references of Italian design in natural materials, collaborating with prominent designers such as Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, Gianfranco Frattini, Ico Parisi, Franca Helg, and Renzo Mongiardino.
Many Bonacina production items from that era did not bear permanent marks or labels; for this reason numerous bamboo and reed pieces are today attributed based on construction technique, materials, and style.
The aesthetics of this basket clearly evoke the organic, natural language that made Bonacina famous in the post-war period: artisanal weaves, soft lines, and structural lightness characteristic of the best Italian bamboo design of the mid-century period.
Proper packaging and traceable shipping across Europe.
