AUTHOR
Osvaldo Provvidone (1920 – 2013) Italian painter. Born in Novara, he was a visual artist able to distinguish himself in the Italian contemporary art scene through a continuous and passionate stylistic research. His formation sinks its roots in the fervent postwar season: he studied at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, having as guiding lights two masters of the caliber of Felice Casorati and Enrico Paolucci, electing the latter as his direct guide. After teaching in Turin at the State Institute of Costume and Fashion (then directed by Italo Cremona) and, later, in high schools and technical institutes in his Novara, Provvidone fully embraced activity in exhibitions. Since the sixties he began to receive notable recognitions, among which the victory of the second prize for tempera at the Roman Biennale of Contemporary Art in 1967 stands out.
From the point of view of poetics and technique, starting in the fifties Provvidone’s art underwent a decisive turn: the artist moved away from figurative rigor to an utopian exploration of abstract spatiality. His style is defined by a very personal painting of gesture and sign, often described by critics as a true “chromatic magma” sumptuous, able to translate emotional interiority into vibrations on the canvas. Conceiving painting as a flow in constant becoming, Provvidone alternated works of extreme delicacy and tonal refinement with creations characterized by strong material resonance and irregular color fields. His insatiable experimental drive led him beyond the confines of oil and tempera on canvas, exploring graphics, mixed techniques on cardboard, and even venturing into textile art and the integration of artworks in aesthetic-architectural contexts.
His works have been historicalized, acquired, or enhanced through exhibitions sponsored by institutions in his territory: the Municipality of Novara celebrated his legacy with major exhibitions, such as the one hosted in the Salone dell’Arengo del Broletto in 2002 and retrospectives at Spazio aperto all’Arte, cementing his role as a vibrant and autonomous voice of Italian contemporary art.
DESCRIPTION
“Senza Titolo,” mixed media on cardboard mounted on panel, 86x68 cm, 1961. On the back an art gallery label and the label of the 2005 exhibition “Osvaldo Provvidone - Selected Works,” copies of the catalog will be provided.
The composition presents itself as an autonomous and material exploration of an inner landscape, an emotional topography where forms never crystallize into defined objects, but remain in a perpetual state of flux and energy. Realized at a crucial moment in Provvidone’s career, just after the definitive break from the more rigorously figurative influences of his training, this work embodies the full adoption of the informal language.
The composition is structured on a dynamic fragmentation of overlapping and interlocked planes, where bold masses of color dialogue and clash. A dark, deep vertical axis, dominated by intense violet and burnt brown, anchors the right side of the composition, while on the left and bottom broad fields of golden ochre, bright yellow, and orange extend, interrupted by blocks of gray-lavender and cream white. The technique is highly gestural and material, with visible brushstrokes that alternate densities and transparencies. Particularly interesting is the play of sgraffito and fine lines, almost filiform, which cross the painted surface, scratching the upper layers to reveal the underlying ones or adding a delicate airy reticular structure, as seen in the central-left area, almost evoking a fragile net or a geometrized figure dissolving.
The work fits perfectly into Provvidone’s mature poetics, characterized by a pursuit of abstract spatiality that shuns superficial decoration in favor of visceral expression. The piece embodies the idea of painting as a “chromatic magma” described by critics, a flowing energy in constant becoming where color is not just pigment but emotional matter that vibrates on the surface. In this period, the artist strengthens his identity as a colorist, pushing to the limit the capacity of color to convey moods and energy, alternating moments of extreme delicacy with sudden “material resentments.” A painting of energetic composition, dynamic and striking in its aesthetic impact.
CONDITION REPORT
Overall good condition. The work features vivid and legible chroma and brushwork; note a slight waviness of the support at the lower right corner (see photo). This does not in any way affect the overall aesthetic rendering.
The photo of the painting set in an environment is AI-generated and should be considered purely illustrative. Only the remaining photos are to be taken as faithful representations of the object and its features, both general and in detail.
