Description from the seller

Product Description
A pair of brass hanging lanterns (tsuridōrō) for shrine or temple use. Made in the style known as chōsoku-type, featuring a hexagonal body supported by decorative pedestal legs. The pedestal legs are carved with cloud and wave motifs.

The body of each lantern is composed of multiple tiers. The upper tier features alternating openwork (sukashi-bori) panels and engraved brass faces. Each face of the main chamber is fitted with a tortoiseshell (honeycomb) pattern brass mesh, and one face opens as a door fitted with a dragon-form decorative mount. On the interior side of the mesh, white semi-translucent panels (believed to be horn or a similar material) are fitted to softly diffuse the light. The domed lid is adorned with a lotus petal-form decorative ring; at the top sits a gourd-shaped finial (hōju), above which a hanging ring is provided for suspension. On the interior of the lid, a spike and crossbar for holding a candle remain in place. The hexagonal base plate is riveted to the pedestal section.

The two pieces are well matched in both form and decoration, and are believed to have been made as a pair of lanterns intended to flank an altar or shrine sanctuary. The overall craftsmanship reflects the traditional technical standards of Japanese religious metalwork.

Dimensions
Height: 20.5 cm
Width: 15 cm
Depth: 15 cm

Weight
687 g (combined weight of both pieces)

Condition
Both lanterns show wear, soiling, and verdigris (green patina on brass) consistent with age and use. The base plate of one lantern shows noticeably more discolouration and verdigris than the other. No structural losses have been identified upon visual inspection; however, no functional testing has been carried out.

Seller's Story

We have been experienced as an antique dealer for more than a decade, we select and purchase high-quality products from all over Japan. I carefully select items with good taste, whether famous or not. I offer you an encounter with unknown Japanese goods. Owner Profile Name: Michito Nagahiro Born in 1986 in Sapporo, Hokkaido. From an early age, I have been fascinated by the beautiful and practical designs of Japanese art, antiques, and consumer products, as well as the mindset and dedication of craftsmen and artists. I frequently visited museums and solo exhibitions as part of my daily life. In 2012, under the guidance of a top mentor in the industry, I established myself as an antique dealer, handling a wide range of items, including Japanese antiques and artworks. Since 2017, I have specialized in selling Japanese antiques and fine art, primarily in Europe, achieving over 20,000 successful sales to date. In 2019, I launched a completely free service to support individuals in Japan who experience loneliness. This initiative involves personally visiting people, engaging in conversations, sharing meals, and, if necessary, providing career advice. More than 1,000 people reach out to me annually for support. Additionally, I am committed to promoting and supporting the sales of emerging artists whose work has not yet received public recognition. My philosophy goes beyond merely selling objects—I strive to convey the stories, history, and emotions embedded in each piece. By doing so, I aim to connect people with the lives of the artists and bring inspiration to those who encounter their work.
