Ashtray - Wood - smoking stand ashtray

A particularly characterful and decorative object from the first half of the twentieth century. This freestanding tobacco stand is crafted from solid dark wood and is dominated by a beautifully carved Barley Twist column – a spiral motif that has been beloved since the 17th century and regained popularity in English and continental interiors in the early decades of the 20th century.

At the top there is a circular recess with four cigar or cigarette rests, originally intended for a removable ashtray or dish. Such tobacco stands were used in townhouses, salons, and smoking rooms as stylish accessories for serving and enjoying cigars and cigarettes. Around 1900–1940 freestanding tobacco furniture and smoking companions were particularly popular in Europe.

The combination of the richly turned column, the profiled base, and the warm, deep-brown wood tone gives this object a stately and almost sculptural appearance. Even without the original ashtray, it forms an impressive decorative piece that sits well in a classic, eclectic, or English interior.
