Relief, Mutter vom Guten Rat - 18 cm - Earthenware

An impressive religious wall plaque from the 1950s or early 1960s, made in dark glazed earthenware. The relief depicts Mutter vom Guten Rat (Mother of Good Counsel) with the Christ Child on her lap in a stylized, monumental design that strongly aligns with postwar church art.

The accompanying text reads:

“Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5)

At the bottom:

“Mutter vom Guten Rat, Patronin des Bistums Essen, wende deine barmherzigen Augen uns zu”
("Mother of Good Counsel, patroness of the Diocese of Essen, turn your merciful eyes toward us.")

This inscription directly refers to the Diocese of Essen in Germany. The diocese was established in 1958, after which the veneration of Mutter vom Guten Rat became significant. This type of relief was produced at the time for churches, schools, parish houses, and Catholic families. The design is inspired by the famous Goldene Madonna of Essen, one of the oldest and most important Marian images in Europe.

The clean, nearly expressionist form language and the dark glaze give the relief a timeless appearance. The piece constitutes a particularly notable object for collectors of religious art, German ceramics, ecclesiastica, and mid-century design.
