Mario und der Zauberer by Thomas Mann, an illustrated hardcover edition bound in blue linen, original German edition published by S. Fischer Verlag Berlin in 1930, 142 pages, 17 x 11 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
“Mario and the Sorcerer. A Tragic Travel Experience,” S. Fischer Berlin 1930, in 12°, first edition, hardcover, - blue canvas -, a novella by Thomas Mann, illustrated by Hans Meid on the binding with 13 drawings by Hans Meid in the text. Binding slightly rubbed, but in good condition.
The novella depicts holidays on the beach of Forte dei Marmi, which lies on the Ligurian Sea and served as Thomas Mann’s template for his fictional Torre di Venere.
The often-made reduction of the plot to a mere fascism parable does not do justice to the work. The fundamental constituents of human action are described in the understanding of Thomas Mann’s worldview, e.g., susceptibility to death and the longing for wholeness. (Wikipedia)
