Description from the seller
The work “Muchacha con banana” is not a printed work. It is a completely original painting, hand-painted by the artist Kno! (1968), created in 2026 using mixed media of acrylic, ink, and varnish on a flat canvas, unstretched, measuring 46.5 x 31.5 centimeters.
It forms part of the series "Gitana Tropical en Europa" which reinterprets the iconic Gitana Tropical (1929) by Víctor Manuel (https://www.bellasartes.co.cu/obra/victor-manuel-garcia-gitana-tropical-1929-0), reflecting on Cuban identity and the lamentable migratory exodus of its people to any part of the world…
About this series, Cuban ethnologist and folklorist Pedro Betancourt wrote:
"Kno! undertakes a bold exercise in iconographic appropriation. Almost a century after Víctor Manuel García painted his emblematic Gitana Tropical (1929), Kno! rescues that melancholic and universal gaze to place it in a new setting: contemporary Europe…
- Kno! is the artistic pseudonym of Jorge Alberto Pérez Fernández: I am a painter and Spanish-born Cuban architect. I graduated in architecture in 1989 and have practiced painting from a very early age, receiving training at the José Joaquín Tejada Academy of Arts in Santiago de Cuba and at the University of Oriente.
Before dedicating myself to professional painting, I designed and built important buildings in the eastern Cuban provinces where I always integrated art with architecture. I served two years in prison at the United States Naval Base in Guantánamo, and since then I have definitively devoted myself to the plastic arts.
During my career as an artist I have received the following recognitions:
- National Solidarity Painting Prize with the Palestinian people, in Cuba, in 1984.
- National Housing Design Prize, in Cuba, in 1994.
- Nominated for Artist of the Year by UNEAC, in Cuba, in 2002.
- Member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba since 2005.
- Finalist of the Miguel Viladrich Painting Biennial, Barcelona, Spain, in 2013.
- Finalist of the Benalmádena City Watercolor Contest, Spain, in 2014.
- Finalist of the Casimiro Saínz National Painting Contest, Spain, in 2015.
- Finalist of the Eugenio Hermoso National Painting Contest, Spain, in 2016.
Private collectors in Cuba, Mexico, the United States, Spain, Russia, France, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Hong Kong own his works.
The overall dimensions of the flat canvas are 46.5 x 31.5 cm. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, unstretched, in a box, perfectly packed, protected with an international tracking number."
