Description of the work:
"Sunset" is part of the series Geometric Imagery, which consists of painted wall reliefs made primarily from MDF and acrylic paint. Inspired by the restored Roman floor mosaics of the Bishop’s Basilica in the artist’s hometown of Plovdiv, the series explores geometry as a visual language that connects different historical and cultural traditions.
Through her study of mosaic patterns, Kostova developed her own compositions, exploring concepts of rhythm, structure, and ornamentation while incorporating elements of Bulgarian folk art and architectural decoration. Her interest in places where diverse cultures have coexisted over centuries has led her to combine motifs from different sources in search of a visual universality.
The resulting works can be understood as geometric landscapes in which multiple cultural and historical layers converge. Constructed from precisely cut lines and defined by fields of both vibrant and pastel color, the forms function as carriers of personal memory, collective heritage, and cultural identity.
About the artist:
Ana Kostova (b. 1995, Plovdiv, Bulgaria) lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. She completed her MFA at Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel, Germany (2021–2023) and previously earned a Master's degree from the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria (2018–2020).
Kostova was awarded the DAAD Prize in 2023. She was nominated for the André Evard Prize for Concrete-Constructive Art in 2024 and for the VHV Award – Artwork of the Year (Painting) in 2025. In 2026, she received a one-year scholarship from the Sparkasse Cultural Foundation.
