Precious 14th-century code of the Divine Comedy, with miniatures and reader’s marginal notes from medieval times.
The manuscript transmits the entire Comedy, followed by the texts of Jacopo della Lana, Bosone da Gubbio and Jacopo Alighieri, with a poem attributed to Boccaccio. Copied by one of the scribes of the “Danti del Cento,” it preserves numerous marginal notes in Latin and vernacular by several 14th-century hands, revealing the early readers’ interest in the poem.
Decoration includes figurative initials and 49 scenes vignetted in the margins, an authentic visual commentary to the text up to the end of Purgatorio. The initials’ miniatures of the three canticles are attributed to Pacino di Buonaguida, among the principal Florentine miniaturists of the Trecento.
At the beginning of the manuscript appears a partially erased coat of arms, perhaps from the Bugliaffi family. Part of the original leather binding with blind impressions survives.
The codex belonged to Senator Carlo Strozzi and entered the library in 1785 together with other precious volumes from his collection.
A work of great historical and artistic charm, uniting Dante’s poetry with Florentine miniatures of the 14th century.
