Description from the seller

THERE IS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1

With this square-format work, Medsan revisits with lyricism the absolute masterwork of Japanese prints — Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa — by introducing a female presence of devastating grace. This giclée features, from behind, a geisha kneeling on a rock amid the raging waves, dressed in a sumptuous midnight blue and red floral kimono, her hair adorned with hairpins and a scarlet flower. The visual impact and the poetry of the composition lie in her gesture: her hand raised to the sky, she seems to dialogue with the monumental wave that rises before her, its cresting foam hanging in a meditative face-off of intense dialogue. A fan in the other hand and a lit lantern resting beside her, she embodies calm and contemplation in the face of nature’s fury. The dusky sky, shaded with peach, coral and mauve, bathes the scene in the light of dusk, while cherry blossom petals dance in the spray. The pictorial rendering, rich in texture and impasto, magnifies this dialogue between human fragility and the power of the elements. A conceptual piece, at once aesthetic, poetic and contemplative, ideal for bringing a graphic, elegant and evocative touch to a modern, contemporary interior.

About the Workshop: Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around a living and plural contemporary creation. Established as a true artistic production space, the workshop operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. By his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive exploration, blending abstract art, outsider art and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, realized and supervised within the workshop, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.

Keywords: Medsan, Atelier Joconde, Le Yack, Geisha, Hokusai, The Great Wave, Kanagawa, Kimono, Lantern, Fan, Twilight, Sea, Contemplation, Petals, Ukiyo-e, Japanese print, Pop Art, Square format, Contemporary, Poetry, Edo
