Eight-volume collection of the satirical French weekly Le Triboulet, by Collectif, in original French, bound in half leather, about 1000 pages across editions from 1879 to 1894.
Description from the seller
Exceptional set of 8 strong bound volumes from the famous French satirical newspaper "Le Triboulet", covering a wide portion of the late 19th century, a pivotal era of the Third Republic. Founded under a royalist editorial line and deeply conservative, this newspaper is a gold mine of historical and artistic value, famous for its ferocious caricatures and political chronicles.
The lot includes the following years, unfortunately not all complete:
1879-1880
1881
1882
1883
1884
1888-1889
1891
1893-1894
Each weekly issue opens with a large satirical engraving on the cover (often signed by renowned caricaturists of the era such as J. Blass or A. Grippero) and contains numerous unpublished illustrations, silhouettes, poems and political pamphlets (notable caricatures of Georges Clemenceau, Louis Blanc, diplomatic tributes, etc.).
Characteristics & Condition:
Binding: Antique half-binding (6 volumes in dark green, 2 volumes in brown). Titles and tomes gilded on the spines.
Binding condition: Good overall with signs of normal use for books of this age (slight rubbing at the heads and corners, minor wear on edges, see detail photos). The text blocks remain solidly attached to the binding.
Interior condition: Good. Paper from the period naturally yellowed with rare foxing not affecting readability. The black-and-white engravings and caricatures are very fresh and well contrasted.
A superb opportunity for collectors of old press, caricatures, or history enthusiasts of 19th-century politics.
Shipping:
Careful and secure shipping with tracking (the total weight of the lot is substantial).
