He holds a Japanese fan bearing the red rising sun motif. He is surrounded by four Japanese women in geisha or traditional courtesan attire (colorful kimonos, complex hairstyles). Two kneel and gaze at him with admiration, while another adjusts his robe. The background depicts an opulent interior of a Japanese audience hall (zashiki) with patterned ceiling panels, a gold background, shoji screens, tatami mats, and hanging scrolls of Japanese calligraphy and paintings on the walls.

Note the authentic detail of the signature "Medsan" calligraphed in Japanese characters (katakana) in a traditional cartouche located at the top right of the composition (メドサン), as well as the artist’s hand signature and the numbering on the back.
