MB 111 Report:
Jikharra 001 29°58'08.2'' N, 21°52'05.0'' E
Ajdabiya, Libya
Acquired: 2022
Classification: HED chondrite (Eucrite, melted breccia)
History: Numerous fragments were recovered, with a total weight estimated at at least 2.5 metric tons, and possibly more than 3 tons, in northeastern Libya. Subsequently, the primary mass holder acquired fifty kilograms of these fragments from a meteorite dealer in Libya.
Physical characteristics: Many fragments brown in color, some with small fusion crust areas.
Petrography: A chondritic breccia composed of lithic clasts several centimeters in size, embedded in abundant shock-recrystallized fusion. The lithic clasts consist of calcic plagioclase and fine-grained pigeonite crystal aggregates, 30–70 μm, with irregular compositional zoning. The fusion matrix is composed of recrystallized pigeonite with mottled compositional zoning and fine-grained feldspar, mostly fibrous. Minor phases include silica, titanium chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron detected.
Geochemistry: pigeonite divided into zones: Fs 50.1±1.5 Wo 11.6±1.7 (Fs 48.1-53.4 Wo 6.9-13.3, n=12); calcic plagioclase: An 90.2±0.7 (An 88.9-91.3, n=10)
Specimens:: 83.5 g at MNB; 205 g including two polished thin sections at UWB; 50 kg with M. Cimala; 63.36 kg with WangZ, 350 kg with M. Lyon, 845.8 kg with DPitt; (including a single 215 kg specimen), ~150 kg with Ali Benamar; 1000 kg with an anonymous Chinese collector.
