Description from the seller
A beautiful decorative wooden speculaas board from the 1970s, crafted as a traditionally carved female figure in folk costume. The relief is richly detailed, from the elegant headpiece and braided hair sections to the geometric patterns in the clothing and the symbolic motifs on the bottom edge.
Speculaas boards have an age-old tradition in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Originally these wooden molds were used to press speculaas dough into decorative shapes. Many portrayals were inspired by folk tales, historical figures and traditional costumes. From the 1960s and 1970s, speculaas boards were increasingly valued as decorative objects and found their way into interiors as wall ornaments with a warm, rural appearance.
This board is made of solid wood and showcases beautiful artisanal carving with a fine, well-worn patina. Thanks to its elongated format and bold form, the piece makes a striking focal point on the wall. The piece appeals to both enthusiasts of folk art and traditional crafts as well as collectors of vintage and rustic home decor.
