Description from the seller
Rare original copy of “The Premier Cypher Telegraphic Code” by William H. Hawke, published by Effingham Wilson, London, with title page dated 1897. It concerns a first edition from the end of the 19th century.
This substantial codebook was used for international commercial telegraph communication. Such books were intended to transmit business messages more quickly, cheaper, and securely by telegram. They contained coded words and terms that could be used by companies, merchants, banks, shipping firms, and international correspondents.
The book is an interesting historical document from the early period of world trade, international communication and teleg, raphy. It provides a nice picture of how commercial messages were coded and transmitted before modern telephony, fax, and digital communication.
The copy comes from an older estate with several telegraph- and trade-related books. The general condition is appropriate for its age: visible signs of aging and use, wear to the cover edges, and browning of the paper. See photos for an accurate impression of the state.
A special collectible for enthusiasts of old codebooks, telegraphy, trade history, communication history, and 19th-century commercial documentation.
