Constant Permeke (1886 – 1952) moved on a hinge point in society, with a footing in modernism and another in the tradition of, among others, Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, and Van Gogh. Although he is often described as one of the core figures of Flemish expressionism, he unmistakably transcends the local context. His oeuvre resonates with the avant-garde movements that arose here and there in Europe just before, during, and after World War I.
