Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016.
From Malick Sidibé’s work we first know the documentary photographs, taken at the surprise parties organized by young people fond of music and freedom as the country prepares for independence.
In 1962, he opened the “Studio Malick” in Bamako.
The studio portrait will constitute the bulk of his work.
People come from everywhere to have their portrait taken by the eye of Bamako…
Noticed at the first Bamako Photography Encounters, he is exhibited at the Cartier Foundation in Paris then in major galleries and museums around the world.
He receives the Hasselblad Award in 2003 then the Golden Lion in 2007.
