Description from the seller
Felice Giordano
Felice Giordano was born in Naples in 1880 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in his city. A central figure in his artistic maturation was Antonino Leto, a painter tied to the tradition of the School of Resina and to the experience of the Macchiaioli, from whom Giordano assimilated the attention to light, the painting material, and the vivid rendering of the landscape.
Throughout his career Giordano developed a painting closely linked to views and landscapes, with particular attention to Capri, Naples, Venice, and Paris. Alongside urban views and seascapes, he also produced marine still lifes and nocturnes, among the most recognizable subjects of his production.
He took part in exhibitions of the Società Promotrice Salvator Rosa of Naples and achieved success also at the national level, including a solo show at the Galleria Geri in Milan. His works are preserved in important public collections, including the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan and the Comune di Napoli. He died in Capri in 1964.
DESCRIPTION
Capri
Oil on canvas
Signed at the lower left
Work dimensions: 59 x 89 cm
Framed dimensions: 88 x 118 cm
This broad view of Capri fully belongs to Felice Giordano’s most appreciated output, linked to the island’s landscapes and to the Neapolitan- and Capri-based painting of the early twentieth century. The scene depicts a corner of a garden facing the sea, with the rocky silhouette of the island visible on the left and an interior-exterior space created through light-colored walls, pergolas, climbing plants, and flowering pots.
The composition plays on a successful balance between architecture, vegetation, and the warm Mediterranean light. The central low wall, animated by flowers and leaves, separates the domestic space from the marine landscape, while on the right the table with the bottle and a few everyday objects introduces an intimate and lived-in note. The whole conveys the atmosphere of a Capri terrace, suspended between the coolness of the garden and the luminous openness of the sea.
The brushwork is quick and loose, built up of synthetic touches that define surfaces without hardening them. Patches of light on the floor, the whites of the walls, the greens of the vegetation, and the blues of the sea create a luminous vibration typical of Giordano’s painting, always attentive to the atmospheric rendering of the landscape.
CONDITION REPORT
Good overall condition, compatible with the work’s age. The painterly surface is legible, with the color preserved well overall and the signature visible in the lower left.

The frame is to be understood as a tribute
