Description from the seller
Giuseppe Ghiringhelli
Giuseppe Ghiringhelli was born in Milan in 1874 and died in Varese in 1944. He first exhibited at the Milan Triennial in 1900 and later participated in several national exhibitions. Trompe-l’œil with game
Oil on canvas
Signed at the top right
Dimensions of the work: 99 x 69 cm
Dimensions with frame: 124 x 94 cm
This painting by Giuseppe Ghiringhelli depicts a still life of game, with a hare and some birds hanging in front of a wooden surface. The composition recalls the taste of trompe-l’œil: the animals seem to be suspended directly on the wooden panel, with a physical presence and depth accentuated by the close crop.
At the center dominates the hare, rendered with particular attention to the softness of the fur, the warm reflections on the coat, and the natural pose of the body. Next to it appears a game bird, probably a pheasant, recognizable by its brown plumage and long tail, while in the upper part other birds can be glimpsed hanging, treated with darker tones.
The painting is carried out with good command of material and light. The browns of the wooden background, the deep shadows, and the luminous effects on the animals create a gathered yet strongly impactful image. Ghiringhelli emphasizes the tactile rendering of surfaces: the hare’s fur, the birds’ feathers, the wood of the background, and the shadowed areas are built with a soft, controlled brushstroke.
The work situates itself within the tradition of venison still life, a genre much appreciated between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where the subject of game becomes an occasion to demonstrate technical skill, naturalistic precision, and luministic sensibility. The result is an elegant and scenographic painting, capable of combining decorative taste and observation of reality.
CONDITION REPORT
Good overall condition, compatible with the age of the work. The pictorial surface is legible, with color preserved well overall and the signature visible at the top right.
