Description from the seller

Giuseppe Montalbano (1940-2013), born in Tripoli on December 19, 1940, the youngest of 7 children. He graduated from the Institute of Art in Palermo and immediately began teaching at the one in Sciacca, together with many illustrious artists who at the time formed a significant professional alliance (Nucci, Fisco, Navarra, Stassi, Nacci, Bruno, Fisco, Cascio).

In Montalbano’s private life, a figure burst in during that period who would change his life: Lia Termine, the woman who would be his muse, his strength, his driving force toward a career in which he would be a protagonist from the 60s to the 2000s on the art scene with solo and group exhibitions.

Montalbano’s painting is unmistakable. It embodies the soul of Sicily with the colors of the sea, sky, flowers, fruit, with the plains and hills; he favors a compositional system in which hedges, fences, wooden shelves, shells, spheres or half-spheres, and ethereal drapes of voile casually resting speak of spirituality. The natural elements are an observatory of this artist’s view of the world’s disenchantment, but also the comforting cradle of the values of his home, his land, and his culture.

The work up for auction is an oil on canvas, dimensions: 24 cm by 30 cm, and it depicts an olive tree; the late afternoon light bathes the viewer in warm tones that unfold in the various layers created by vigorous and elusive brushstrokes.

The simplicity and stylistic approach recall Van Gogh’s landscapes and still lifes. The painting is enhanced by a splendid solid wood frame lacquered in the 80s style. Signature present bottom right. In perfect condition with no damage.
