Osvaldo Ferrer presents 'Heritage', an original oil on canvas portrait (2020) with Rembrandt-style chiaroscuro, measuring 157 cm high by 106 cm wide, hand-signed with COA, originating from the United States and sold directly by the artist.
Description from the seller
Artist: Osvaldo Ferrer (MA)
IG: @osvaldoferrerart
Title: "Heritage". 2020, Havana, Cuba / Louisiana, USA
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Dimension: 42in x 62in
About this portrait:
Anchored in classical portraiture, this piece constructs the subject's imposing presence via strict Rembrandt lighting. Ferrer employs a deep chiaroscuro to isolate the figure against a dense void, emphasizing the topographical realism of the facial structure.
The pigment execution reveals acute attention to texture, contrasting the woven rigidity of the hat with the soft drapery of the garments. Stripped of anecdotal narrative, the painting functions as a monumental ethnographic record, utilizing academic rigor to project the cultural weight of the Afro-Cuban diaspora.
The portrayed subject is Yosbany Milanés. He is a descendant of Haitian migrants who moved to
Cuba at the beginning of the 20th century, mostly to work on the Sugarcane fields.
From the beginning, Cuban society has always
been very mixed. I met Yosbany during a visit to the municipality of Palma Soriano in Santiago
de Cuba. In this town I have worked on a few occasions because it is very rich in Afro-Cuban culture. "Papito”, as his family and friends call him, founded a cultural project called ENEGRO in the 1990s.
ENEGRO’s aim is to salvage the Franco-Haitian culture in Cuba. The presence of the Milanés family in the folkloric festivals of the province of Santiago de Cuba has for generations been fundamental to its tradition. They are an integral part of the heritage and cultural identity of an important region in Cuba.

Osvaldo Ferrer Miranda was born in Las Tunas, a province in eastern Cuba, in 1989.
From a very young age, he developed a great interest in drawing; the back of hundreds of sheets of his father’s old work files served as a support for his first strokes. The soul of an artist was ever present, and in 2004, he began his studies in the fine arts, obtaining a scholarship at the Professional Academy of Visual Arts in his native province.
During the first 4 years of studies, he learned about sculpture and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in this specialty in 2008. In 2009, he was accepted into the Higher Institute of Art of Havana (ISA) to continue his studies.
During their 6 years of studies at the ISA, he participated in several collective exhibitions and
arts workshops taught by great masters from Cuba and abroad.
In 2018, Osvaldo emigrated to Louisiana via an invitation by Northwestern State University of Louisiana(NSULA) to their Master of Arts program. The artist currently lives and works in the city of Miami, Florida, where the Cuban diaspora transferred much of the island's culture and identity to the United States.
In 2013, he began working on his graduation thesis, which would be presented two years later, during the XII Havana Biennial of 2015. This personal exhibition was entitled "Tataranietos de Dios" meaning “God’s great-great grandchildren”, composed of 15 oil portraits and a sculpture, the result of a two-year field study and multiples trips throughout the island, focusing on the origins and legacy of the African religions of Cuba: practices that are an important pillar of cultural identity in Cuba and the Caribbean region.
The portraits depict Cuba's highest-ranking religious leaders, who have diligently preserved these traditions across generations. Originating in Africa and brought to the Caribbean through the transatlantic slave trade.
