Description from the seller
Magnificent bud vase or sculptural piece in chamotte stoneware, crafted by the renowned French ceramicist Odile Pichon (born 1937), a leading figure of the Bourges school (a student of Jean Lerat) and the famous potters' village of La Borne.
Date & Context: Circa 1960 - 1970. A historic piece from the Golden Age of La Borne, a mythical period in the renewal of stoneware in France where artists freed themselves from utilitarian purposes to create living works of art.
Technique: Stoneware hand-modelled and thrown. The base is left raw to reveal the ochre grain of the clay, contrasting with a partial glaze in brown tones and a superb white/gray speckled coating (foam or "leopard skin" effect), typical of the alchemy of La Borne wood-fired kilns. The neck is asymmetrical, festooned and pierced by a delicate sculptural cut.
Dimensions: Height 15 cm | Base Diameter: 8 cm.
Condition: Perfect condition. No chips, cracks, or restorations.
Authentication: Piece certified. Hand-signed "O. Pichon" handwritten incised under the base.
Artist's Note: Odile Pichon is a highly sought-after artist among collectors of studio design and modern art. Her pieces, perfect reflections of this pivotal era, command high prices on the market and in galleries.
A rare opportunity to acquire a powerful, organic, and condensed testimony of the great La Borne era.
Stunning sculptural bud vase in grogged stoneware, handcrafted by the renowned French ceramicist Odile Pichon (b. 1937), a prominent figure of the Bourges school (student of Jean Lerat) and the famous potters' village of La Borne.
Date & Context: Circa 1960 - 1970. A historical piece from the Golden Age of La Borne, a mythical period in French ceramic history when artists moved away from functional pottery to create abstract, living art.
Technique: Hand-thrown and altered stoneware. The unglazed ocre base highlights the natural, tactile grain of the clay, beautifully contrasting with rich brown tones and a speckled white/grey overlay (foam or "leopard skin" effect)—highly characteristic of traditional La Borne wood-firing. The asymmetrical, scalloped rim features a delicate, intentional sculptural piercing.
Dimensions: Height: 15 cm | Base Diameter: 8 cm.
Condition: Perfect condition. No chips, cracks, or restorations.
Authentication: Fully certified. Hand-signed "O. Pichon" incised on the underside of the base.
Market Value: Odile Pichon is highly sought after by collectors of modern design and studio pottery. Her works from this pivotal era are increasingly rare and command high prices in specialized galleries and art auctions.
A rare opportunity to acquire a powerful, organic, and beautifully preserved piece of mid-century French ceramic history.
