Description from the seller
Ancient Burmese altar, golden lacquered wood and metalwork, circa 1890 - Burma / Republic of the Union of Myanmar
Materials: gold-painted wood and polychrome and gilded metal
Period: 19th century
Origin: Burma / Republic of the Union of Myanmar
Good condition considering its age and use
Dimensions: 140 x 100 x 3 cm.
Exceptional pediment or crest of a traditional Burmese temple altar, dated to the late 19th century. This type of structure topped Buddhist sanctuaries and stands out for its technical complexity and its deep symbolic charge.
The top is crowned by a large perforated metal structure, gilded with fine gold, creating intricate intertwined vegetal motifs that imitate vines and stylized flames. The wooden base is lacquered with traditional red lacquer, derived from the sap of the lacquer tree. This tone not only serves as an aesthetic contrasting background, but also protects the wood against insects and tropical humidity. On this red background there are additional decorative motifs in gold. These gold areas were achieved by applying extremely fine sheets of 24-karat gold leaf on a resinous lacquer base. The gold reflected light in the dark interiors of temples, symbolizing the spiritual light of Buddhism and divine purity.
Belongs to the Shan (Tai Yai) style, characterized by meticulous and exquisite craftsmanship — evident here in the gilded, elaborate and intricate ornamentation — highlighting its importance in the country’s historical and cultural narrative as well as its artistic mastery.
With a highly symbolic triangular profile, the piece draws the eye to the central panel’s artistic beauty — made of polychrome and gilded wood — framed by a broad and extraordinary border, adorned with masterful gilding. The stepped and ascending silhouette evokes the form of a stupa or sacred mountain.
This piece serves not only a decorative function, but is essentially spiritual. Its history evokes Burmese reverence and spiritual devotion. Such pieces were commonly placed at the top of thrones where Buddha statues were housed, or serving as the upper pediment in door frames and niches of monasteries or domestic altars. Its opulence reflected the donor’s status, as commissioning high-quality gilded carvings added spiritual merit (kamma) for their next life.
