Description from the seller
Original Hasapi, a traditional two-string lute from the Toba Batak people in North Sumatra, Indonesia.
This specimen comes from a Dutch monastery, whose monks worked as missionaries in Indonesia. This lute was brought from there to the Netherlands. The exact age is not known to me, but given the patina I would estimate about 100-150 years old.
The instrument is hand-carved from a single piece of hard wood and has a distinctive boat-shaped body. The neck is decorated with simple woodcarving. The cord used as a substitute for the strings appears to be of more recent date.
