Description from the seller
Edward Hopper: “Summer Evening, 1947”.
This offset lithograph is in very good condition.
Size: 44 x 31 cm.
In Hopper's paintings, couples are usually used as a means to express hope or loneliness. Here, however, the man and woman on the veranda, both young and dressed in the style of the late forties, form an exception to the artist's melancholic relationship paintings.
Nevertheless, the scene is imbued with inner tension. The two figures, lit as actors on a stage, stand almost stripped of all defense mechanisms in the bright spotlight, yet seem to feel safe. Their meeting place is a delineated area, and the last area to be conquered is the woman's body. The colors and the concentrated composition make this a nearly symbolic painting.
It escapes a single unambiguous interpretation, but like other Hopper works on similar themes, it provides empirical commentary on the patterns of existence, giving the viewer the impression of witnessing the opening scene of the story of a relationship.
Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
The displayed photos are part of the description.
