In “La Mirada,” the artist concentrates the painting’s whole expressive force in the face as the realm of identity, memory, and inner disjunction. The composition presents two presences fused into a single facial structure, where color planes, black lines, and geometric forms build an image of great psychological intensity.
The gaze occupies the conceptual center of the piece. It is not merely eyes that observe, but a presence that addresses the viewer. Each eye seems to belong to a different emotion: one more introspective, the other more vigilant; one close to silence, the other to assertion. This duality turns the portrait into an interior scene, as if the figure reveals several layers of itself at the same time.
The artist works from a contemporary cubist sensibility, fragmenting the face to show not a fixed identity, but an identity in motion. Greens, reds, yellows, blues, and whites organize themselves into contrasts that contribute emotional depth and visual tension. The work does not seek to represent a face literally, but to express what remains hidden behind it: thought, memory, desire, vulnerability.
The title “La Mirada” reinforces that idea of direct encounter. The figure looks and, at the same time, seems to be looked at. In that silent intersection, the work gains an intimate and almost symbolic dimension.
“La Mirada” speaks of the complexity of seeing and being seen, of identity as a fragmented construction, and of the emotional intensity that a face can contain when it becomes a mirror of the inner world.
