Description from the seller

Exceptional Grand Tour Micro Mosaic Hinged Bangle Bracelet – Rome, Italy – Mid-19th Century (circa 1850–1870) – Silver, Gilt Silver and Micro Mosaic Glass Tesserae

A remarkably rare and museum-quality Grand Tour hinged bangle bracelet, created in Rome during the mid-19th century, representing one of the finest expressions of the Roman micro mosaic tradition developed for wealthy travelers undertaking the Grand Tour of Europe.

The bracelet is crafted in silver with traces of original gilding, richly decorated with exquisitely hand-set micro mosaic glass tesserae. At the center, two elegant birds—a swan and a dove—are depicted among flowering branches on a deep red background, framed by elaborate floral panels featuring finely executed roses and polychrome blossoms. The extraordinary precision of the microscopic glass tesserae demonstrates the exceptional skill of Roman mosaic workshops active during the period.

The reverse side is equally fascinating, featuring the raised inscription “ROMA”, a distinctive characteristic of high-quality Grand Tour souvenirs intended for discerning visitors to the Eternal City. Decorative repoussé scrollwork further enhances the bracelet’s elegance.

This type of bracelet was produced in very limited numbers and today is considerably rarer than the more common Grand Tour brooches and plaques. Pieces combining architectural quality silverwork, raised “ROMA” lettering, and such refined micro mosaic decoration are highly sought after by collectors of Grand Tour jewelry and 19th-century Italian decorative arts.

The bracelet retains a beautiful untouched antique patina that highlights its authenticity and age. The micro mosaic remains remarkably well preserved, with vivid colors and excellent definition throughout. The hinge and clasp function correctly.

A prestigious collector’s piece that perfectly embodies the artistic excellence of Rome’s Grand Tour workshops during the golden age of European travel.
