A refined Japanese doll by Kono Tomiko (1927– ), one of the leading female doll artists of the Showa period.
She was recognized as a “Contemporary Master Craftsman”, awarded to artisans of exceptional skill in modern traditional crafts.
The figure depicts a geisha performing a fan dance, gracefully holding a gold folding fan.
Her hairstyle is adorned with decorative kanzashi. The yellow tortoiseshell-style ornament is carved with auspicious motifs including cranes, pine, bamboo, and plum, symbolising longevity, resilience, and good fortune. Additional wisteria hair ornaments and bira-bira elements add elegance and movement.
She wears a vivid red kimono richly decorated with traditional motifs such as pine, plum, chrysanthemum, maple leaves, and peony. These motifs carry auspicious meanings associated with longevity, seasonal beauty, prosperity, and elegance.
The gold folding fan she holds is decorated with pine trees, a symbol of longevity, steadfastness, and enduring vitality.
