Description from the seller
Title: 大地の記憶 Memory of the Earth — 坂田甚内 Jinai Sakata (益子焼 Mashiko Ware)
This Monumental Vase, titled Memory of the Earth/土の記憶, is the work of Jinai Sakata/坂田甚内, a Japanese ceramic artist renowned for his innovative approach within the Mashiko ware tradition. The piece bears the artist's personal seal.
Like a Jomon vessel unearthed after thousands of years, the raw coil-built texture and the dramatic gradient — from deep charcoal black to pale ash white — evoke the memory of Japan's oldest ceramic tradition brought into the present.
Every crack is accepted as the will of the earth itself, an inheritance of the prayers that Jomon people entrusted to fire and clay, while the surface shifts in expression with each change of light, quietly uniting primal force with contemporary sculptural beauty.
Born in Tokyo in 1943. From the late 1980s, Sakata has held solo exhibitions internationally, including in New York. His works are held in the collections of major religious and cultural institutions, including the Ise Grand Shrine, Izumo Taisha, Takachiho Shrine, Enryaku-ji Temple, and the British Museum.

Height: approx. 29 cm/Diameter: approx. 7 cm/Weight: 1,183 g

【Technique】
Built using the coil technique — a primal method continuous since the Jomon period — the clay was stacked by hand and fired without smoothing the surface, allowing the marks of making to become the skin of the work. Through carbonization firing in an oxygen-restricted kiln, the flame naturally produced the gradient from black to ash white, while contraction during firing gave rise to the cracks that are integral to the piece.
