Description from the seller
This object is a vintage analog depth gauge for divers [5]. It was made by the Italian brand SOS (Strumenti Ottici Subacquei) from Turin [9], a well-known manufacturer that produced high-quality mechanical diving instruments in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s and at the time closely collaborated with top brands such as Scubapro.
Extended description
Independent instrument: It is a mechanical depth gauge (profondimetro) designed to be worn on the wrist like a watch over a diving suit.
The dial: The meter has a clear cream-white/yellow dial.
The outer scale runs up to 80 meters, which at the time was the standard depth limit for sport and early technical diving. Inside the text "SOS Patent" and "Made in Italy".
Operation: The instrument operates entirely mechanically based on water pressure. As the diver descends deeper, water through a diaphragm or tube pushes the needle forward.
It has a parabolic scale, making the meters at shallow depths (where decompression stops are most important) easier to read accurately.
Housing & Strap: The meter sits in a robust metal housing with a thick glass or Plexiglas lens. It features a wide, sturdy black rubber wrist strap with a metal buckle to withstand the heavy pressure underwater.
Current status: Collector’s item
Nowadays divers use modern digital dive computers. This type of analog meter is now mainly sought after by collectors of vintage diving equipment (scuba memorabilia) or by people who dive with historical gear.
Origin: Italy.
Brand: S.O.S.
Diameter: 65mm.
Thickness: 36mm.
Period: 1968.
Length: 285mm.
