Douceur du rivage is an oil painting on panel from France, sold with its frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on canvas board from a European school, dating from around the 1920s, with an illegible signature at the bottom right and handwritten notes on the reverse. The work depicts a coastal, intimate scene featuring two women seated by the sea, with small boats visible on the horizon in the background.
The painting is part of a tradition of marine genre painting, with influences from late Impressionism and naturalist Post-Impressionism. The scene does not seek a complex narrative, but rather the capture of a serene, everyday moment: two ordinary figures resting or conversing along the coast, enveloped by a silent, contemplative atmosphere.
Stylistically, it features a loose, delicate brushstroke, especially noticeable in the low vegetation in the foreground, in the treatment of the sky and sea water. The color palette is soft and restrained, with bluish grays, ochres, purples, pinks, and earth tones, creating a luminous yet melancholic atmosphere. This chromatic sensitivity is very characteristic of early 20th-century European painting, particularly in coastal scenes and popular themes.
The composition is notably sober. The two figures are placed in the foreground, integrated into the landscape rather than framed theatrically. The adult figure, seated on the right, looks toward the young woman on the left, creating an intimate, silent visual relationship. In the background, the sea and sails add depth and reinforce the maritime mood of the scene.
The work retains old handwritten notes on the reverse, of undetermined reading, which constitute an element of documentary interest. The signature visible on the front is illegible or difficult to identify, so the cataloging is prudently kept as a European school work from the 1920s.
The condition can be assessed from the photographs, which are part of the description. It is recommended to examine the images carefully to evaluate the general state of the artwork, the surface, the board, and the frame.
It is presented framed with a black frame and a gold inner moulding, in keeping with the piece’s aesthetics. The frame is included as a gift with the artwork.
A piece of notable decorative charm and collectible value, especially attractive to lovers of early 20th-century European painting, coastal scenes, marine genre painting, and intimate compositions with Impressionist influence.
