Description from the seller
H. Raes
Belgian School, around 1900
Cow resting in the meadow
Oil on canvas
Oil on canvas of Belgian school, dated around 1900, signed H. Raes in the lower right corner. The work depicts a cow lying down in a meadow, placed in the foreground and surrounded by soft, enveloping vegetation. The scene stands out for its compositional simplicity, its tranquil atmosphere, and its evident connection with the European animalist and rural tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The painting is part of the Belgian animalist landscape genre, a genre much appreciated in the naturalist context of the period. Belgium, like France and the Netherlands, developed a significant tradition of rural painting, interested in representing domestic animals, countryside scenes, meadows, livestock, and rural environments. In this case, the artist focuses attention on the animal’s figure, treated with sobriety and descriptive sensitivity.
From a stylistic standpoint, the work shows a clear influence of European naturalism and 19th‑century animal painting. The cow is represented with careful modelling, attending to anatomy, body volume, and coat texture. The treatment of the background is more diffuse and atmospheric, with soft greens and light brushstrokes that place the figure in a natural setting without detracting from its prominence.
The composition is balanced and direct: the animal occupies the central zone of the scene, lying on the grass, with its head slightly turned toward the viewer. This arrangement conveys a sense of calm and proximity, very typical of intimate rural painting. The color palette, based on greens, ochres, earth tones, and golden hues, reinforces the natural feel of the whole and creates a serene atmosphere.
The work preserves a restrained, academically naturalistic touch, but with a gentle and decorative pictorial treatment. The contrasts between the animal’s warm coat and the surrounding vegetation add depth and visual richness, while the soft light contributes to the sense of repose and stillness.
The condition can be observed in the photographs, which are part of the description. It is recommended to carefully review the images to assess the general state of the painting and the frame.
It is presented framed with an ornate gilded frame of classic style, in keeping with the piece’s aesthetics. The frame is sent as a gift along with the artwork.
A decorative piece and of collectible interest, especially suitable for lovers of European animal painting, Belgian naturalism, rural scenes, and cattle motifs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
