Former tagger in the 1990s, Enigme09 discovered photomontage in 2009. Painter Jacques Monory reinforced his path by suggesting a poetic approach to his art.
His compositions combine elements from the world of advertising or popular culture with others from the corpus of Art History. Their blend is sharp, explosive, surprising, unsettling, but also invites questioning the status of images and any possible hierarchy of values between them.
The artist manages to give meaning to familiar signs emptied of content due to their overwhelming presence. But, of course, this meaning is most often far from their original signified. Enigme09 sums up his artistic credo in a concise slogan: “give voice to the images to open our eyes.”
