In “Naughty figures,” the human figure and portrait become fertile ground for symbolic transgression. It is not just about bodies; it is about gestures that disobey, forms that defy norms, identities that fold and unfold in a constant game of moving around. Each painting is an ambiguous scene where mischief is not merely an act of humor or cunning, but a critical strategy: a way to subvert the expectations the viewer carries when looking. The series builds on a deliberately tense balance between the recognizable and the overflowing. The figures and faces, although alluding to tangible corporeality, refuse to be domesticated by the gaze. They contort, dislocate, fragment. They do not obey the rules of decorum nor the conventions of gender, beauty, or pose. They are there to discomfort, to seduce, to provoke. The title “Impressive face” alludes to that fragile moral classification with which we organize the visible world: what is permitted and what is forbidden, what is serious and what is frivolous, what is art and what is vulgar. These people do not ask for permission. They seep in. They laugh. They display themselves without apology. In their disobedience, they become uncomfortably free. And in that freedom, they reveal what is often hidden behind the silence of what is “correct”: the desire to look, but also the fear of being seen.

Carlos Asensio was born in Castellón in 1986. At a young age he began his academic training under the tutelage of the Cuban artist Amaury Suárez.
