In this painting the layering of the paint plays an important role. The skin is built up from multiple thin and impasto layers of white, pink, lilac, green and blue. In some places earlier tones and corrections remain visible; elsewhere the paint is applied thicker, especially around the faces, hair, and shadow areas. As a result the surface changes when you approach closely or view it from a different angle.
The work reveals its best with soft light that falls slightly from the side across the canvas. This grazing light makes the height differences, brushstrokes, and underlying paint layers visible. Front-lit or very harsh light can make the surface appear flatter. In cool daylight the blue and green tones are most visible; warmer light brings forward the pink and earthy layers.
