Important floral composition arranged in a wicker basket on a dark background, following the tradition of the great Baroque flower pieces developed in Flanders and subsequently spread throughout Europe. The ensemble brings together various floral species organized in an ascending composition with a notable decorative effect, highlighting the color richness of the roses, hydrangeas, and blue flowers that emerge from the gloom through contrasted lighting.
The work shows affinities with the models of floral still life developed between the late 17th and 18th centuries, within the tradition of Spanish painting and of the decorative repertoires disseminated by numerous European workshops. The composition, with a strong ornamental character, prioritizes the visual impact of the whole and the contrast between the bright tones of the flowers and the dark background, a feature characteristic of Baroque aesthetics.
The surface preserves an old patina and presents alterations derived from the natural aging of the varnishes and from historical interventions, circumstances that do not prevent appreciating the painting’s quality or the artist’s chromatic sensitivity.
This is an interesting example of Baroque floral painting, executed with workmanship and a notable decorative sense.
